At Home with Hilary MacMillan

We proudly profess that we’ve been devoted fans of Canadian designer Hilary MacMillan for years. Season after season, we’ve stalked her shows, poured over her collections, oohed and awed as piece after gorgeous piece drifted down the runways of Toronto Fashion week. And now we are ecstatic that we can feature a few of our favourite pieces from MacMillan’s first size inclusive collection! If you’ve been following along with us over the past few months you will have seen us share the big news about this fantastic new collection for SS2020. But now, you get to see how it works on the Long and Short, women like you with our perfect imperfections!

For my gorgeous plus size babes: Skirt (same as above, available in size 2 to 28) // Jacket:   As this piece is not available in plus, here are 2 pieces that would look just as fab! Jacket , Top //

I have dreamt of wearing a piece by Hilary MacMillan for years! I’ve seen many of her shows and loved everything that floated down the runway, but my enthusiasm was always somewhat tempered, in part because her pieces were so stunning that I just assumed they were far above my modest means, and by the fact that both my sister Gail and I could not fit in the pieces. Now, we aren’t the Bobbsey Twins or anything, but there’s something to be said for the shared experience of shopping with a friend, or in my case, a sister. Thus, you will not be surprised to learn that this new collection right here is truly a game changer for both Gail and I! We’ve been pining after this collection for months and now it’s finally here!

Let me just say, I went from only dreaming of having a Hilary MacMillan piece to having 5 Hilary MacMillan pieces! And yes, I spent my own real money on them, and there are still a a bunch of other pieces I want (alas, the money will only stretch so far – sigh).

This gorgeous quilted double layered zippered skirt was the first piece to catch my eye! Between the beautiful light blue colour, the quilted detail and the functioning zipper that allows you to adjust it to your desired level of sexy, you can no doubt understand how I fell head over heels in love! This is the ultimate skirt for both work and play; keep the zipper down for the office, and then zip that baby up, up, up for cocktails with friends!

I knew that for this particular look I wanted to play with texture, so I decided to pair this striking skirt with this beautiful denim jacket. Talk about your unexpected twist on the traditional denim jacket right?! I’m 5ft9 rocking a size extra-small in this jacket and the sleeves just work for my long arms. Alternatively, as you tall girls know, this jacket would look equally phenomenal with the sleeves pushed up. Fully lined, this denim dream is great for that in between weather you get in spring, and will work for those summer nights. It also has a double-breasted style snap closure, which is great for you lucky ladies with a larger bust. It will keep you locked and loaded and help to prevent that dreaded gaping.

And BIG news babes – Hilary MacMillan is currently having a special promotion. They are offering their spring promotion boxes where you get one complete outfit for a great fixed price of $265 Canadian. My stunning quilted skirt can be found in one of the boxes along with a beautiful trench coat (which Hilary MacMillan is known for) and sleeveless mock neck top! When you consider that the quilted skirt alone is $240, this box comes at a steel!

All in all, this collection has got me shook! I love that it is size inclusive (except for a few select items) and the level of quality and inspiration in the pieces is beyond compare! Ms. MacMillan, we are so grateful to designers like you that recognize that women are beautiful at every size! Thank you for not just dressing us, but creating exquisite pieces that we dream of wearing!

Gail – Finally dressed in Hilary Macmillan, the world now makes sense

Listen, Listen, Listen! I have been a Hilary MacMillan fan for a while – dating back to my Fab Four Fashion days. I admired her pieces from a far as I know her pieces, while incredibly beautiful and fashion forward, would sadly not fit me. So imagine my surprise when last fall I peeped the Hillary MacMillan runway show on instagram and watched plus size models rip the runway along side their straight size counterparts. I was SO EXCITED that I quickly headed to their website to see more of the collection up close!

This spring/summer collection is next level! Being able to picture myself in a designer brand that actually had a body like mine in mind was a great feeling, let me tell yah.

So, these two pieces from Hilary’s collection really spoke to me and they come in straight and plus sizes. The first is this pale blue wrap skirt. It’s made from faux leather and features front snaps down the front with side seem pockets. The skirt doesn’t have any stretch to it but the sizing is very generous. Normally I wear a size 24 but I sized down to a size 22. Oh and the sizing for Hilary’s plus size clothing is “real plus size” not junior plus sizing.

I especially love the snaps on the front of the skirt which are fully “operational” not just decorative. I can picture myself wearing this skirt not only at the office but also for a night out on the town – at least once COVID-19 lets up and lets us be free again.

Next came this equal parts fashion forward and outerwear staple – the trench. This double breasted trench coat got a fun twist in that it’s made from faux leather just like my skirt. It features a matching belt, is fully lined, has self covered buttons and front and back rain flaps. This trench would be perfect with a great pair of jeans – fashion versatility, don’t you just love it!

And that’s the long & short of it!
